Beating of Wings creates transformative theatrical experiences that expand the possibilities of live performance by reimagining where it happens, how it's created, and who it belongs to.
Through immersive and community centered storytelling, rigorous ensemble-driven collaboration, and interdisciplinary artistry, we create evocative participatory work that challenges convention while inviting imagination, meaningful connection, and critical reflection.
reimagining stories to reimagine the world
We are drawn to stories that have the capacity to change the way we see ourselves and the world around us. We are particularly interested in myth, folklore, fairy tales, classical texts, and stories about women and marginalized perspectives - any works with deep cultural histories that can be revisited, disrupted, and reimagined. We believe that engaging with these stories meaningfully requires asking difficult questions about the values and assumptions they carry, while also finding new possibilities within them. We create work that uses the past as a starting point for imagining something new.

We believe theater belongs to more people than the traditional structures of the theater industry have often allowed. We seek to build meaningful relationships with the communities where we work and to make ambitious, imaginative performance accessible beyond traditional theater spaces and structures.

We embrace ambitious and inventive work that incorporates theatricality, experimentation, interdisciplinary collaboration, and unconventional approaches to live storytelling. We’re interested in what happens when we stop asking what theater is supposed to look like and start asking what it could become - and how we can adapt it to better serve our modern needs and communities.
We believe the world of a theatrical production is as important as the story it tells. We have a deep commitment to aesthetics, design, and the creation of fully realized theatrical environments that engage the audience's senses and imagination. We want audiences to experience the rare feeling of being genuinely transported: of entering a space and finding themselves immersed in a world that feels distinct from everyday life.
OUR NAME
Beating of Wings takes its name from Anne Carson’s "The Glass Essay":
"She wanted liberty. Well didn’t she have it?
A reasonably satisfactory homelife, A most satisfactory dreamlife-
why all this beating of wings?
What was this cage, invisible to us,
which she felt herself to be confined in?”
From the beginning, we were drawn to that simple image: a bird beating its wings against the bars of a cage.
When the company was first conceived, we interpreted that image specifically about women and other marginalized creators in the arts: the ways they’ve historically been constrained by the structures, expectations, and gatekeepers of the theater industry, and the desire to create space for these artists to make ambitious, unconventional work on their own terms.
This commitment to championing women and other marginalized voices remains an important part of who we are and how we approach our work: we believe in challenging systems that limit whose stories are told, whose voices are valued, and who gets to create.
But as we’ve evolved and the theatrical landscape has changed, our vision has grown beyond that original focus.
We became increasingly interested not only in who is allowed to make theater, but in what theater itself is allowed to be. So we now think of that “cage” more broadly - as the conventions, expectations, and structures that constrain creativity and limit what theater can be.
If Beating of Wings was once about letting women out of their cages, it is now about letting theater - and creativity itself - out of its cage.
The wings are still beating.
