At Beating of Wings (BoW), we believe that there’s no such thing as a “universal story;”  no one story can encompass the diversity of all human experiences. We strive to challenge and interrogate which stories have been historically considered “universal” and which audiences and artists have traditionally been invited to participate in those stories.

We believe that theater should be as accessible as possible to a wide range of artists and audiences. By prioritizing and adopting inclusion, diversity, equity, and accessibility (IDEA) practices across casting, production, and programming, we seek to better represent the vast spectrum of diverse experiences in our Greater LA community. Through these efforts, characterized by feminist, pro-LGBTQIA, and anti-racist values and policies, we hope to draw new, open-minded audiences who have previously felt alienated from traditional regional theater.

To this end, we choose stories that attract a diverse pool of artists. We aim to cast and staff productions with a range of artists that represent the vast diversity, both visible and invisible, of our community, including but not limited to: gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, body size, ability, and life experience. We agree to operate in making our spaces safe through exercising cultural sensitivity, respecting bodily autonomy, and fostering a culture of informed consent.

We recognize that we are not perfect in these pursuits - we will exercise patience with ourselves, allow ourselves to make mistakes, and commit to learning from them.

We acknowledge that IDEA is an iterative process, and that our current leadership and production talent pools are not currently as diverse as we hope they will someday be. As our theater company and resources grow and expand, we will make efforts to increase the diversity of people both on our stages and off. We will consistently evaluate our IDEA practices with all artists who enter and exit our spaces and seek relationships within our community to foster ongoing conversations with the goal of continual improvement in our IDEA efforts.

While our IDEA practices may evolve over time to reflect a widening scope of inclusion, we affirm that our methods have always been and will always continue to be rooted in indelible values that seek to better the world.

We can’t be everything for everyone - even we can’t create universal stories and theatrical experiences - but we want to try to be a lot of things for as many people as we can.  At heart, we at BoW believe that establishing, maintaining, and improving IDEA efforts are central to the health of both our theater and larger communities.
